Adam Holmes

Adam Holmes is a 21 year old singer/songwriter from Edinburgh who is a 2011 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominee and Scottish Traditional Music Award winner. He also tours worldwide with traditional folk band Rura and plays regularly around Scotland with his own group, Adam Holmes & The Embers. Adam provided the keys, rhythm guitar, Drum Programming and soothing melodic choruses as well as co-production with ZA throughout .

MOG

Scotland’s modern day Rabbie Burns and seminal rapper Mog provides vocals on all tracks having already collaborated on past releases with both ZA & Holmes. 2011 Scottish New Music Awards winner and 2012 nominee for Artist of the year in Scotland. Soon to be releasing an album entitled In Black N White with opening and closing tracks from Bang Dirty.  Check out Chapter 8 produced by Mickey Blue for more MOG.

ZA

Classically trained flamenco guitarist and award winning music producer from Edinburgh,  ZA provided the Bass, lead guitar and Orchestral strings thoughout the album  along with a number of raps, backing vocals and co-production with Adam on all tracks. Check Bonded In Bombs  for something a bit different.

MOG & ZA – Sins Of The Father (Everybody’s Child – Garry Fraser)

This is ZA’s first forage into Film score and soundtracking working with the brilliant Garry Fraser on his hard hitting Documentary Everybody’s Child (or My Lives and Times for the 60 min BBC version).

Featuring work from both Adam Holmes one of Scotland’s rising stars and also the seminally superb, award winning MOG. Gritty subject matter and moving tones show through in this highly emotional and honest work.

A documentary in which recovering heroin addict and film director, Garry Fraser, takes us to the heart of the poor marginalised community he grew up in. Garry faces up to the damage done by his life of crime and drugs as he works to ensure his three children have something he never had; a loving, supportive family.

This track had been sitting in the archives since August 2011 due to an unknown but niggling problem I had with putting it into the public domain. As it stands, I do not believe the track is finished and still lacks a certain something. However,  after countless hours attempting to find this ‘Je ne sais quoi’ I admitted defeat and left it to exist as it had from its inception.

The music was composed in one two hour sitting after a long sleepless night under the mentally liberating influence of MDMA. As performances go, the music was easy to play first and foremost because it’s not technically complex, but more importantly, I knew exactly where it lay in my concious mind. It was a beautiful memory of a freedom pure and untouched, one seldom known in today’s claustrophobic globe. Luckily this memory willingly transpired into music whilst the humble sun rose over Ostkreuz and the drugs began to wear off somewhat.

The world we inhabit is closing in on us rapidly. With each passing day our digitalism and symbiotic embrace with the matrix grow ever more apparent. This it would appear,  is our  evolution. It is the next stage in human development, or perhaps, the final stage. Almost Digital was a concious attempt to document that social and mental change musically.

I would like to dedicate this piece to one of my most important musical influences, Sergei Rachmaninov. His music nurtured me through the hardest times, filled me with pain, sorrow, happiness and an emotion so pure unlike no other. (with the possible exception of Jeff Buckley.)

For those who may never have come across his work classical lovers or not, his Piano Concerto No. 2 should give an indication of his genius with this particular performance given my Rachmaninov himself. From 5:24 seconds in it’s almost impossible not to shudder as he delves into the eternal darkness that is human existence. Rachmaninov was always more intrigued by the darker aspects of reality and makes no effort to hide this in his compositions. It should also be noted that during his lifetime the works he composed were almost impossible to replicate and he stood alone as one of the worlds greatest ever pianists, if not musicians.

As with every tribute or dedication, this is infinitely inferior in every respect to the musical deity that was Rachmaninov. However, my attempts to build this piece with euphoric interludes in mind is undoubtedly a result of his influence through my academic musical years.

Rachmaninov  was one of the last connections, if not the absolute last, between 19^thcentury romanticism and modern times which bodes nicely as the final sentence in this ultimately useless ramble. As we soldier on into the digital age leaving behind all notions of analogue romanticism I give you my somewhat lacking musical interpretation of this feeling.

ZambianAstronaut teamed up with the Tape That boys and girls to create a video project surrounding the creation of a large Graffiti tag consisting of the Scottish Music Producer’s name. It was a memorable day out captured on photo by Luisa - http://laurasepsis.com/ with some fantastic shots. ZA also took the camera and created this video from his footage of the day combining an artistic story board depicting the day.  Many graffiti videos are time lapsed efforts which work well to show the development of the piece but fail (IMO) to capture the atmosphere of the day and the difficulties surrounding such an art from.

Luckily, Berlin is a sprawling metropolis littered with abandoned buildings ripe for the plucking and on this particular day, we found ourself in a dilapidated GDR Brewery/Sports Centre complex. (Strange combo I know..) Once inside which was no easy job in itself, we travelled upwards through the darkness finally coming to a large open roof with an incredible view of Berlin. Getting there wasn’t particularly safe, less so as the author of this post had been consuming large quantities of mind altering substances till the early hours of the morning. Just another sleepless night in Berlin. The sun was blazing hot and the sweat ran from ones forehead but we sat and chilled while watching the boys work there magic. I occasionally picked up the cam in my sorry state to video them too.

Track number three from MOG & ZA’s recent release Bonded In Bombs (2011) begins with a sample from the original Skip James recording (Hard Time Killing Floor Blues – 1931). This track is as relevant lyrically now as it was then with little changing socially in the 80 years or so since its release.  Seamlessly linking with the 2011 rework we welcome Werd (SoS) on a feature whilst Mog as always is ever present with controversial yet for most, justified lyrics. *
